I agree with your assessment of the G9. I also purchased a Lensmate (for using a polarizing filter and IR filter) and Custom Grip and Thumb Rest from LensMate. The grip really makes holding the G9 more comfortable! Here's the link:

I enjoyed your review!

Thanx for the review Bill. It was very helpful in mellowing my anxiety. I had just ordered the G9 from Amazon today and your review confirmed my feelings about the decision. I already have a 5D, which is great, but I've really been feeling the need for a walking around camera. Very often I see images of people, places and things when I either don't have my 5D with me and that would be fine in a smaller format anyway. With the inclusion of RAW, IS and 12.1 mpx as well as 6x optical it seems to be ideal for street photography. Walking around with the 5D with a flash for nite shots is a little rough on the arthritis. Hopefully the G9 will resolve that issue.

Thanx again

Thanks for the review, Bill. I just bought a G9 myself (it's currently at the post office waiting for me to pick it up :)) the same reason you did. My main reason though is to use it on a trip to Norway early this summer. Glad to hear that you're having good luck with it and these kind of reviews, I'm sure, will help me avoid buyers remorse. Looking forward to giving this little camera a go.

Hi Neil,

A choice between the 400D and the G9 is a tough one. The 400D will be the more expensive choice. If you already have a good wide-angle lens that you can mount on the 400D, it is more likely that you will get better results than what you can expect from the G9. I have the 10-22 EFs lens and I am getting excellent results on the 400D. On the other hand, the G9 is smaller, produces outstanding photographs, if you stay under ISO 200, is a cheaper alternative, and has the advantage of portability when carrying around another camera such as the 5D, 100-400mm, combination. Frankly, the 5D will produce far better landscapes than either the 400D or the G9. In sum, my first choice would be to shoot with the 5D and a good wide angle lens and force myself to change lenses when the subject of the photograph is different. I know, it's a real pain to do that, and it has been my experience that the second I put on a wide angle lens, something happens in front of me that demands the need for a telephoto lens! This is not to say that the G9 is not an outstanding camera, it is. And, as I pointed out in my review, Darwin Wiggett, one of the best landscape photographers in the world today, routinely uses the G9 and reports that his stock photo agency is selling the shots. In sum, one of the most frustrating aspects of photography today is deciding what equipment to take on a journey. Increasingly I vote for equipment that is light weight and flexible. And I must admit that the G9 is simply a joy to use and has brought back fun to my photography. I am currently planning a journey to the Isle of Skye and the G9 will be with me along with my 1Ds II. But, there is no doubt in my mind, that my first choice will be to shoot with the 1Ds II because of it's high resolution. That is why I think you need to consider using the 5D on your journey. It will produce photographs of much higher quality than either of the other two cameras.

Bill, great review. I am trying to weigh up getting a 400D or a G9, initially to wander around Delhi, Jaipur and Agra but also to use for those landscape shots in Ranthambur when the 5D has the 100-400 attached. What would you recommend Bill, the G9 does RAW so I am tempted in this direction. Of course your shots from this camera look good, doesn't mean mine will ;)

Cheers

Outstanding! I just bought a G9, and happened on your site tonight. I will be following this, and just wanted to say that I couldn't agree more with your 'wish list' to Canon! The image of the lady in the market is superb - hard to believe it came from this little camera.

Hi Michael,

I bought the Canon WP-DC21 underwater housing. While the housing is very well built, I had issues with focusing on subjects because one must look straight on at the LCD screen. While this works well with SCUBA gear it is problematic when snorkeling. As I do more SCUBA trips, I hope to get better photos. We will see.
