Canon Powershot G11 Sample Photos

canon_g11_450

For those interested, some sample photographs done with the Canon Powershot G11 have been published on a Japanese site.

Go to:  http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/powershot/g11sp/g11sp.html

Some of the shots were done at higher ISOs.  And, I must admit, I am impressed with the results.  The clarity at ISO 400 appears superb. I am duly impressed with the shot of the bottles done at ISO 800.

Site navigation is a bit of an issue, but make sure you click on “Gallery.”  It may take a while for the photos to load as the site is done in flash.

Canon has published three official samples here, click on red “View Sample Images:”  http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=19209#ModelFeaturesAct

The lady with flowers is simply stunning.  Although I note it was shot at ISO 80.

Would be nice to see some real crops but so far this shapes up to be a possible winner. Maybe they are listening at last, maybe next comes the 1D build in a 5D body?

    Hi Neil,

As we all know, what counts is the image quality. I can still achieve excellent results with my G10, although not at higher ISOs. If Canon had given me a 24mm lens and HD video I would buy one in a second. Grumble.

However, that said, one cannot overlook the quality of the samples. I agree, full size images would be wonderful to view. I’ll add links as I find them.

As to a professional 1D body on a 5D sized frame, well, I doubt that will happen. Looking forward to Canon’s next announcement about the 1D series. We should know soon.

    Best regards,

    Bill

I wonder why all three images on Canon USA’s site are at ISO 80 if the big selling point of the G11 is the improved high ISO performance of the new sensor.

On the Canon Japan G11 site the ISO 400 and 800 images look nice but 72 dpi JPEG’s are hard to evaluate for noise. I’d love to see some RAW files at ISO 400 and 800.

    Hi Jeff,

Canon typically does sample photos at lower ISOs.

Until we see some hands on examples, it will be difficult to judge IQ.

But, I must admit that I am impressed with what I have seen.

    Best regards,

    Bill

I want very much to be impressed by the samples from this camera. When reviewing sample images I always go first to the human portraiture looking for what I call ‘krinkle hair’. It’s a manifestation of a type of noise that can appear at any ISO, which I think is categorized as luminescense. Whatever, I hate to see ‘krinkle hair’. I simply can’t abide it and I’m disappointed by the evidence of it I see in the lady-with-flowers photo. I also generally find her appearing ‘processed’. My honest opinion is that, resolution aside, my 10 year old 3.2 mp Canon G1 does better at ISO 100.

    Addendum–

In the interest of fairness I am compelled to add that I just saw a sample G11 image at Canon-Europe of the same model, different setting. Again, looking for ‘krinkle hair’ I found it much much subdued, alleviating my dismay, and restoring my strong interest in this camera. Canon would serve themselves well, I think, to replace the lady-with-flowers at the U.S.A. site. See:

    Hi Bill,

Sods law, canon bring out a new model…!
Just bought the G10 a 2 months ago, feel like i’ve been ripped off. Is the G11 that much better do you think? or is the change of sensor, and reduction in megapixel going to prove to be a winner.

    regards
    Guy

    Hi Guy,

You made an excellent purchase of the G10. It produces outstanding images. From what I have read and seen, I see no reason to buy the G11. Canon still did not give us a wider lens or f/2.8. Still no HD movies.

I do like the swivel LCD, that would be very helpful for doing landscape and macro photography, but it is not worth it to me to make a change.

As to improved IQ? I will wait and see.

    Best regards,

    Bill

    Hi Bill..
have just come across your site whilst browsing for comments on the new G11.
    I’ve just purchased one.
I had been using a Poewrshot S1Is until last saturday ..when it went on the blink.
There were no G10’s left in my local photo store but they were able to get a G11 from Vancouver.
I have a question for you which I hope you will be able to answer.
Do I have to uninstall the old info that came with my S1IS. ?
I have a mac OSX leopard.
    ……
I.ve been browsing your site all this afternoon long and have enjoyed the variety of pics from all round the world…especially the one’s of the Scottish highlands.
I’ve been a hiker most of my life and the scenes were memories of my countless wanderings in the Cairngorms and the Glencoe area.
I’ve bookmarked your site and will return for more photographic entertainment. Wonderful way it is, to spend a gloomy sunday afternoon.
All the best and good luck.

    Hi Graham,

If you mean uninstall the Canon software, then the answer is no. The G11 should have later software that you might want to load. It has been my experience that the Canon software overwrites the older software during installation.

    Best regards,

    Bill
