Artist’s Choice Series – Counterpoint
Counterpoint

Counterpoint is a musical term meaning “Two or three melodic lines played at the same time.” Here the elements of the composition play their light in a counterpoint of position in the graph, with a melodic tone which is real and not contrived. One might say that the colors here are not natural, that such colors cannot exist in nature, yet I remember the light vividly as you see it.
What I have learned in the process of selecting a photograph as an “Artist’s Choice” is that each work has its own special grace, thus the search for a personal style is subservient to what the light creates, not what an artist may do to mold an artificial work fitted to others expectations.
As I explore this process of selection, prompted by the thoughts of Glyn Davies, inspired by the works of my mentor Ruud Peters, and encouraged by my colleague Melanie M, my focus will move away from finding works that look like what others have done, and instead will pull out of my collection those works created by the light I have found. And if by doing so a unique “style” emerges, it will have emerged from the light itself.
