Ring of Bright Water

One of my most viewed photographs is this one made at Buttermere in the English Lake District.

The title was stolen from Gavin Maxwell’s famous book and film about a man and an otter.  The title seemed to fit the photograph because of the bright ring created by a patch of light striking the hill and reflected in the lake.

The start of this day was not a good one from the perspective of a photographer.  It was very foggy and a slight rain hit my face as we walked down from a parking area to the base of the lake.  We began taking shots and were mostly negative about the prospects for the day.  Then suddenly a cloud opened and light fell upon the hill.  I was ecstatic.

One never knows what may occur when in the field shooting.  Never give up, keep going, sometimes magic happens.
